With all the love its most recent installment has been getting, it should come as no surprise that the Planet Of The Apes series is going to be moving into the realm of video games. What is a little surprising, however, is the way it intends to do so.
The aptly titled Planet Of The Apes: Last Frontier is set to play out in a similar style to the games put out by Telltale Games franchises, or 2015’s Until Dawn. The game will function mostly as an interactive story, putting certain choices within the player’s hands. Taking place between the Dawn and War installments, the game follows both a group of apes and a human colony, as the two factions come into contact. Check out a gameplay video released by IGN below.
I’m not going to lie, my expectations aren’t high. The game has character designs that look like they belong in the PS3 era, and it doesn’t seem to offer a whole lot in the realms of player choice. It also seems quite strange to put the player in charge of two warring factions, simultaneously. Wouldn’t the player inherently root for one side over the other, and thereby act accordingly? Still, the game’s trying something new, and taking a risk that could actually pay off. Either way, it’s set for a release later this year.
