In this article, we will be talking about how liberal NYU is. Let’s get into it!

First off, let us talk about what makes an institution or group “liberal”.

What makes an organization considered liberal is mostly dependent upon which issues they are supportive of and which ones they oppose. More often than not, people who identify as liberals favor things like social justice, equality, and freedom for all.

Social Justice refers to policies that address inequalities in our society such as racial inequality, gender inequality, economic inequality, and so on. Equality means making sure everyone has equal opportunities and resources. Freedom means giving people autonomy over their lives and self-determination.

At New York University (NYU), you can find very liberal groups and individuals. Some examples include student organizations dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion, feminist clubs, LGBT+ resource centers, environmental activist groups, and more.

Many students at NYU believe in social justice, equality, and freedom and actively work towards those ideals. Many take part in protests and demonstrations and speak out against injustices happening around campus and beyond.

History of liberalism

Liberals have been around for a long time! Before there were liberal ideas, there was nothing but tradition or rule by an individual. Systems such as monarchy, dictatorship, and democracy are all ruled by one person and their beliefs and values.

Liberalism is actually much older than you might think! Ancient philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle discussed what we would call liberals today.

Plato described his ideal society in The Republic as being composed of three classes: rulers, warriors, and workers.

The rulers lived off the labor of the workers through taxes while the warrior class got paid to go into battle and defend the wealthy from any uprising.

All three classes shared in common good health via diet, exercise, and sleep; therefore, they needed to eat food that promotes health and exercises to stay healthy.

And since the workers provide wealth to the others, they need to be rewarded for their work so that they will keep producing it. This is why Plato advocated equality before death – because everyone gets put to death at some point, we should not make people of different social classes suffer longer than necessary due to nature.

Aristotle also proposed a similar government structure to The Republic. He called it Aristocracy instead though and his definition of a “good” leader differed slightly from Plato’s.

What makes you liberal?

The term “liberal” has different meanings across political spectrums, but there is one thing that unites most liberals — an understanding of how to use empathy to motivate action. Liberals understand that trying to appeal to or manipulate people can often backfire – it is much more effective to listen to and learn about other people, and then work towards solving their problems with informed solutions.

This principle applies not just to politicians, but also to business leaders, educators, parents, and anyone else who wants to see positive change in the world. It is what made Martin Luther King Jr. successful as he worked towards civil rights for African-Americans; Gandhi was able to inspire peaceful protest against colonial rule in India through his emphasis on nonviolence; Mother Teresa helped bring hope to those suffering from poverty and sickness in third-world countries by putting their needs above her own.

By applying this same lesson to yourself and to others, you will find that your sense of well-being grows, and your desire to make the world a better place increases at the same time.

The effects of liberalism

Over time, liberal societies can become too focused on serving their own interests instead of looking out for others. This is what makes them more prone to have power grabs and corruption.

A powerful group that is only concerned with advancing its own agenda will sometimes take advantage of weaker groups or individuals who are less influential.

This happens when people in weaker positions give up and let themselves be taken advantage of because they do not see any other option than to accept the situation as normal.

We saw this in action during the Great Recession, when wealthy elites took over the government’s response to help themselves while leaving average Americans behind.

In times like these, it is very important for stronger groups to stand up against injustices done to weaker ones.

By coming together and supporting each other, even if at first it feels uncomfortable, we can create a sense of community and hope for the future. – Political Ideology Essay

The above paragraph sums up how harmful it is when parts of society feel left out and ignored by others. It also describes how hard it can be to fight such inner battles when you don’t feel like yourself anymore.

It is your moral duty to stay strong and true to yourself, but this may not always work. You need to find ways to cope with being part of a minority group.

If nothing changes, you will continue to feel excluded and powerless which will hurt you both mentally and physically.

Popular liberal ideas

One of the biggest misconceptions about what it means to be called a “liberal” is that you have to agree with every popular idea out there. You don’t!

That’s like saying someone must love chocolate because they like milk. Sure, some people enjoy chocolate more than milk, but this doesn’t make them fans of one or the other.

I would argue that most people are too focused on being either/or-ists when defining political ideologies. This isn’t very helpful in terms of understanding who someone is as a person.

It also assumes that if an idea is widely accepted then it must be good, which isn’t always true. For example, giving away money to anyone we feel sorry for can seem nice, but it could be a bad thing if those gifts become opportunities for self-promotion.

Liberalism and the environment

We live in an increasingly interconnected world, where one thing people do has global implications. As our population grows and economies expand, we need to make sure that there are adequate resources for all of us to survive and thrive.

A large part of this comes down to how much energy we use. Energy is something everyone needs, whether it’s to operate heavy machinery or send messages via smartphone.

The more energy you consume, the less space there is left for other things like forests or water, and thus longer-term sustainability becomes harder to achieve.

Governments actively promote using energy efficiently, but some argue that doing so is too expensive. This argument may be true at times, but only temporarily. In the long run, efficiency is the better option.

What is socialism?

Socialism, as most people understand it, is communism. Communism is defined as any system of government where all power is held by the collective instead of individual citizens or groups. In other words, whoever has a job is in charge of running things. This doesn’t seem like a good idea to most people because we know what happens when there’s no one at the top making decisions!

Socialism was never fully implemented anywhere in history. That isn’t to say that it can’t work, but it hasn’t been successfully done before so we have no examples of it working.

Some believe that our current state of global capitalism is the result of socialism failing (the Soviet Union being an example of this). Others think that capitalism won out over socialism due to a simple truth: people are greedy.

If you give everyone equal access to something, then they will want more of it than anyone else. This creates competition which is why companies exist — they need to be successful to survive.

As hard as it may be to imagine now, not too long ago almost every person lived off the land and social order did not exist within nations. Civilization could barely hang onto its existence without organized religion and governments.

We’re living in a different time now. Technology has made it possible for individuals with enough money to live a wealthy lifestyle whereas just a few generations back such a thing was reserved for the rich.

Who was Karl Marx?

The political philosopher, theorist, and Marxist Friedrich Engels once said that “Marx is the theory and Lenin is the practice”. This means that Marxism is an overarching philosophy that includes the theories of his friend and collaborator Karl Marx.

Like Marx, Lenin focused his efforts not only on changing how people run their governments, but also what kind of government should be implemented. He advocated for communism as the final goal, which sounds crazy at first, but makes sense when you think about it.

A communist society is one where there are no rich or poor, private property does not exist, and everyone in the country gets the same amount of food, clothes, shelter, and other basic needs. This way, even if someone is very wealthy now, they would have nothing later because everything is shared.

The important thing to remember here is that being communist does not mean having a party that takes control after a violent revolution. It is simply describing how the ideal world will function.

Who was Friedrich Engels?

When you say your mission in life is to “change the world,” there are two very important things that follow this statement. First, you have to define what it means to change the world. Second, you need to decide if one person can do it or if everyone has to work together as a team.

Engels defined changing the world as bringing about an end to capitalism and establishing socialism. He also believed that humanity would not survive past the next few generations unless we worked together for a common good.

So how liberal is he? Very!

He wanted to see an end to capitalism because he saw how corrupt it had become and how unequal it left people behind. He thought a system where only those with money will succeed is no way to run a society.

He hoped to see equality of opportunity instead so that anyone could succeed through hard work. And he wanted to see us working together as a community instead of just individualistic thinkers who look out only for themselves.

These are all qualities of a socialist organization and system. So yes, he really did believe that ending capitalism would bring about positive changes for the human race.
