Let’s look at some numbers! In our Health & Nutrition category, we’ll be looking at one of my favorite nutritional markers — the antioxidant intake or deficiency level in your blood. More specifically, we’ll be talking about something called the t-score. The t-score is simply calculated by finding the average of your vitamin B12 levels, iron levels, and zinc levels and then comparing it to an established number.
If your three individual levels are higher than the average, then you have enough of that nutrient present in your system. If they’re lower, then you’re probably lacking that specific nutrient as well.
When performing this test, there’s no reason to focus only on whether you’re getting enough of each nutrient individually. Instead, determine how much of all three nutrients you have and compare it to the t-score.
How is it different from a D score?
The key difference between a possible disease risk factor (or potential cause) and a probable disease risk factor is how much of an effect there is.
A possible disease risk factor can increase your chance of getting sick, but having more of it does not guarantee that you will get sick. A probable disease risk factor has shown to consistently predict if or not someone gets sick, so it is given greater importance when determining whether or not someone has pre-disease state.
There are several categories under which most nutrition risks fall. MTHFR genetics and folate/methylation status are examples of this. Having one or both of these less effectively methylated genes increases your risk for many diseases, particularly neurological conditions like ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and dementia.
However, just because you have one or both of these doesn’t mean you will get those diseases. Only people with other nutritional deficiencies or underlying health issues are at true risk for developing adverse effects of poor nutrition.
Who should have a T score?
Having a low body mass index (BMI) is one of the most important things you can do to be in good health. A BMI lower than 25 is considered ideal, as it indicates someone who wants to lose weight.
A healthy person with a normal weight often has a T-score between 20 and 30. People with a higher BMIs tend to have a more severe case of overweight or obesity, making them more likely to suffer from serious long term conditions like type 2 diabetes or heart disease.
In fact, people with a very high BMI may be diagnosed with these diseases, even if they’re not. This is because height and weight affect how your blood glucose levels are controlled, for example.
What does a T score mean?
A normal or healthy body weight is considered to be within one to two decades of your “normal” body mass index (BMI). Therefore, anyone who belongs to this group has an average BMI.
A person with a very high BMI is said to have overweight status. For example, someone with a waist size that is more than 40 inches for their height can easily say they are overweight.
By using the standard definitions of a BMI above 30 and a WC greater than 102cm for men and 88cm for women, we know that people with obesity risk conditions should seek treatment.
Obesity increases your risk of having heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, sleep apnea, hypertension, stroke, gallbladder disease, and gout. All of these health problems increase in prevalence as you age.
What are the symptoms of mental health conditions?
Some signs or symptoms of a mental condition include:
Changes in mood, behavior, thinking, activity level, and/or ability to relate to people
Sporadic outbreaks of anger or depressed feeling
Irritability that seems out of place for the person
Acting aggressively towards others, self-injury, or suicidal thoughts or attempts
Throwing things like dishes or breaking windows
Withdrawal from friends, family, and work
If you notice any of these behaviors in someone you know, it is important to be careful about what questions you ask. It is also very helpful if you were given permission to access their medical records and check with them directly whether they have a doctor they see sometimes.
People who suffer from mental illness often feel ashamed or guilty so they may not come forward immediately. Even when they do, they might not tell the whole truth because of fear of being judged.
It is best to be aware of some basic terms and recognize the early warning signs before anyone gets hurt.
What are some tips for having a mental health check up?
When talking to your doctor, be aware of any warning signs or symptoms that may indicate a need for help.
It is important to know what to look out for before you ask to see your doctor. If you feel anxious or depressed about something at work, make an effort to distract yourself from it.
Take breaks outside the office to reduce stress. Also try to get some sleep and avoid overworking.
Look into services and facilities available in your area for support. This can be through community groups or by talking to colleagues and superiors.
If you notice changes in how you spend time, how motivated you are towards tasks, or if you find yourself feeling overly stressed, talk to someone. Ask family members, friends or your boss if they have seen anything unusual about you.
What can you do to help your mental health?
One of the most important things that you can do for your mental health is recognize when something is out of control. If you are struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression, take some time to evaluate what may be causing this.
It could be work related, relationship related, financial related, or anything else.Try to address each one of these areas in order to find relief.
Work can be tough at times, but if you have invested into your career or profession, you will need it! Having enough sleep, eating well, and limiting alcohol and tobacco use can all contribute to helping you feel better.
If necessary, seek professional help by talking to your doctor, psychologist, counselor, or psychiatrist. All professionals agree that seeking help is a very positive thing.
Also try looking into local programs and services that can help you. There are many ways to manage symptoms and deal with issues.
Is there any link between mental health and physical health?
According to research conducted in 2014, there is! A group of scientists analyzed data from over one million people across six different studies to see if they could find a correlation between overall mental well-being and good cardiovascular or respiratory function.
They determined that there is – very slightly! When researchers looked at how often individuals were diagnosed with depression or anxiety, and then measured their blood pressure levels, they found that those with more symptoms of mental illness tended to have higher blood pressures than others.
However, this only held true for certain types of mental illnesses – not all mood disorders are linked to high blood pressure. And even when it did, we still need to be careful about attributing changes in blood pressure to just one factor.
Other factors can include stress, diet, genetics, and sleep, to name a few. But while having less positive emotions may contribute to raised blood pressure, being happier doesn’t seem to do anything beyond that.
What are some tips for being more assertive?
Being more confident is great, but there’s a difference between having confidence in yourself and being aggressive or even bullyish.
Being confident means knowing that you know what you’re talking about and you believe in your own abilities, but not feeling overwhelmed by expectations of others. This can be tricky at times, though!
It’s easy to get discouraged when people don’t seem to appreciate your hard work, or if they go ahead and do something without asking your permission first.
This happens A LOT in professional settings — perhaps you’ve got an idea that could help their department, so you pitch it to them, only to be ignored or rejected. It can feel like a lot of work with no reward, which makes you give up.
But giving up isn’t always the best option – sometimes, you have to keep trying until you find someone who wants to hear your ideas. And while it may take time, you’ll eventually find somebody.
